Why did Vinicius Jr miss Real Madrid vs Sevilla LaLiga clash?

The Brazilian has been suspended for the game.

Vinicius Jr has been issued a four-match ban after his red card against Villarreal last weekend and missed Real Madrid’s LaLiga meeting with Sevilla today.

Real Madrid’s Brazilian attacker was sent off in their 1-0 win over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu when a VAR review found he had grabbed the hair of Villarreal midfielder Nathan Saliba during the lead-up to what would be considered his second goal of the game.

The disciplinary body of the Spanish Football Federation then issued the 26-year-old a four-match ban, two for the hair-pulling incident and two for his attitude to the referee after being sent out.

Real Madrid challenged the verdict in an effort to get the penalty lowered, but the appeal was thrown down on Friday 16 October. That meant Vinicius will miss the clash with Sevilla, next weekend’s Clásico against Barcelona, the trip to Racing Santander and the visit to Valencia.

The ban is solely for domestic tournaments; therefore, Vinicius will be eligible for Real Madrid’s Champions League games in that period.

Vinícius Jr has scored only one goal in 10 appearances for club and country this campaign, a poor result for a player of his ability. We’re talking about somebody who got ever so close to getting their hands on the Ballon d’Or two years ago, and has universally been recognised as one of the world’s finest throughout much of the 2020s.

It’s a slump like no other he has experienced since becoming a star, and there are few options for Vinícius Jr to play his way back to form before the international break in November.
