Mexico will take on England in an exciting Round of 16 clash in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 on July 5. However, hours before the match is scheduled to kick off, there have been serious concerns that adverse weather could lead to delays in the game.
Both teams are expected to go head-to-head in an attempt to become the fourth quarter-finalist in the expanded 48-team edition of the tournament in North America. However, talks of impending thunderstorms have dominated the conversation before the clash.
Weather forecasts show that storms and lightning strikes are a distinct possibility during the latter stages of the game, which will take place in Mexico City. As a result, FIFA briefly considered rescheduling the clash to a later kick-off time, but ultimately decided against it.

Warnings issued at Estadio Azteca

With rainfall affecting parts of the Mexican capital, the Estadio Azteca issued a shelter-in-place order for fans inside the stadium. Fans were asked to seek shelter away from the stands to escape the downpour.
This has led to concerns that the fixture may be delayed due to adverse weather. As per the protocol being followed in the ongoing World Cup, play is suspended for 30 minutes if a lightning strike is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.
