AFCON 2025: Points table, most goals, assists & more after matchday 1

Matchday 1 ended with many surprises and unexpected results.

The African Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON 2025) matchday 1 concluded with some thrilling results after the competition got underway this month. Hosts Morocco opened the tournament with a win. They will be eager to sweep all their group matches in the tournament and go all the way to lift the trophy.

Meanwhile, Egypt also opened their first game of the competition with a win, as Mohamed Salah inspired his nation to a deserved three points.

Nigeria and Tunisia secured three points each in Group C following identical beginnings. The Super Eagles overcame Tanzania 2-1, while the Carthage Eagles dominated Uganda 3-1.

Senegal defeated Botswana 3-0 in Group D to make a powerful statement. DR Congo trail closely after defeating Benin 1-0. Benin and Botswana are seated at the bottom of the standings with zero points.

Algeria defeated Sudan 3-0 to top Group E. Both defeated teams of this group are still looking for their first points after Burkina Faso’s 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea put them in second place.

Ivory Coast lead the last pool, Group F, following a close victory over Mozambique. After defeating Gabon 1-0, Cameroon are now tied on points, setting up a fiercely contested match between the two established powers.
