Both sides faced each other in the league game today in Jeddah.

Al Ittihad faced Al Nassr in a thrilling first-versus-third match on Friday night in an attempt to increase their lead at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings.

With 33 points from 12 games, the hosts were leading the standings, while the visitors were in third place with 25 points from their first 12 games.

From several bottom-half performances between 2018 and 2020 to emerging as a front-runner for the title in three of the last four seasons, Al Ittihad have made an incredible comeback in the Saudi Pro League.

Al Ittihad’s comeback was ultimately crowned in a spectacular 2022–23 title win, as they secured 72 points from 30 games and finished five points ahead of Al Nassr to clinch their first Saudi Pro League title since 2008–09. They had previously come close in 2020–21 and 2021–22 with third and second-place finishes respectively.

The visitors were looking to catch up to the league leaders going into this match in their attempt to maintain their quest for the first Saudi Pro League title since 2018–19.

Since then, they have continuously fought for the championship, placing second in 2019–20, third in 2021–22, and second in 2022–23 and 2023–24. However, they have been unable to unseat the mighty Al-Hilal, who have won three of the last four Saudi Pro League championships.

Al-Nassr were already eight points behind the league leaders after 12 games, with 25 points from seven victories, four draws, and one defeat. It is likely that this frustration has continued into the current season.

With four victories and one draw from five games, the visitors were in good form and had been playing well away from home. This gave them a chance to overcome Al Ittihad for the third time in a row. However, the Karim Benzema and Co. were too much for the Knights of Najd to handle.
