The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup is underway. 1,248 players across 48 national teams are battling heavily for the prestigious title. The flagship tournament continues to produce moments of brilliance.

Most of the time, the headlines can be about the goal scorers, but own goals are also very capable of changing the course of any match. It can make a match for a team and break the game for the other. Own goals have a significant role in the FIFA World Cup.

The 2018 edition of the mega competition had a record 12 own goals. This is also the highest during a single campaign on the world stage.

In the ongoing edition of the flagship tournament, there have already been four own goals scored. Damián Bobadilla was the first one to score an own goal in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He accidentally deflected a low cross delivery into his own net.

Paraguay later lost the game to the USA by 1-4. This is an unwanted stat. Most of the time, a defender can be turned into an unfortunate protagonist.

The second own goal of the ongoing tournament came when Miro Muheim of Switzerland mistakenly put the ball at the back of his own net. They only got to secure a single point against Qatar. The most recent own goal came in the Austria versus Jordan match.
