La Roja are the most successful football team of the 21st century.

Spain’s men’s national football team have long been a powerhouse in international soccer. Known for their distinctive red jerseys and skillful play, “La Roja” (The Red One) has left a persisting mark on the sport’s history.

The team’s journey to success has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. While Spain have been a member of FIFA since 1904, it wasn’t until the early 21st century that they truly hit their stride on the global stage. Their rise to dominance was swift and impressive, transforming them from perennial underachievers to world-beaters in a matter of years.

Spain’s trophy cabinet tells a story of recent glory, with major wins coming in rapid succession during a golden era of Spanish football. Their success has not only brought joy to millions of fans but has also influenced the way the game is played worldwide.

The Spanish men’s national football team have built an impressive collection of trophies over the years. Here’s a rundown of their major wins:

World Cup: Spain claimed their first and only FIFA World Cup title in 2010. They beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final, with Andrés Iniesta scoring the winning goal in extra time. This victory was especially notable as it made Spain the first European team to win a World Cup outside of Europe.

European Championship: The team has won the UEFA European Championship three times. Their first victory came in 1964 when they hosted the tournament. It took 44 years for their next win, which came in 2008. Spain then defended their title successfully in 2012, becoming the first team to win back-to-back European Championships.

UEFA Nations League: In 2023, Spain added the UEFA Nations League trophy to their collection. This win rounded out their set of major titles, making them only the second team after France to win the World Cup, European Championship, and Nations League.

Olympic Games: While not considered a major trophy in men’s football, Spain did win a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and also got two Silver medals in 2000 and 2020.

FIFA Confederations Cup: Spain have never won this tournament, but they did finish as runners-up in 2013, losing to Brazil in the final.

Other Achievements: From 2008 to 2013, Spain was named FIFA Team of the Year six times in a row. During their peak years from 2008 to 2012, many experts considered the Spanish team one of the best in football history.

The team’s success, especially their run of three major titles in a row (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, and Euro 2012), has cemented Spain’s place among football’s elite nations. While recent years have seen fewer trophies, the Spanish team remain a force to be reckoned with in international football.
