Canada are in Group B with Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Qatar. The left-back for Bayern Munich told reporters on Wednesday that although his recuperation is the top priority, but he is not going to risk his injury recovery and participate in the first game of the competition.
“Let’s see what happens for the second and third game, maybe if we make it out the Group Stage. It all depends on my rehab and how my body reacts to the treatment, how quickly I can heal, and obviously, how healthy I can get while not risking anything.”
Interestingly, Davies continued his customised rehabilitation program on Wednesday by working out alone as he hopes to play in other group games of the competition.
As he races against time to recover for the start of the World Cup, Alphonso Davies has discussed the psychological effects of his recent injury setbacks.
Alphonso Davies on having suffered multiple injuries since his comeback from a torn ACL:
“Mentally, it was very draining, suffering these injuries. I was going into a hole where I was doubting myself, but I had that time off and I thought about why I’m doing this and how important this is to me.”
Davies stays hopeful of being fit in time for Canada’s World Cup opener against Bosnia on June 12
“The first game is coming up pretty quickly. The thing we talked about, me and the coach and the people that were in (a meeting regarding his fitness), I think we understand how important the first game is. But we understand recovery is always an important thing. If I’m recovering as good as possible, let’s see. If not, then there’s no need to rush.
Anything is possible in life. For me, it’s (all) depending on how the recovery is going, how these next few days or this week leading up to the game goes.”
