Arda Guler speaks on Kylian Mbappe partnership; comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo & Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid

Guler & Mbappe have formed an impressive tandem on the pitch.

In what has been a genuinely pivotal season for the young Turkish talent, Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler has talked candidly about his developing impact on the squad and his close relationship with teammates and coaches.

The 20-year-old, who is among the first names on the team sheet, has been one of Xabi Alonso’s most trusted players since taking over as manager in the summer.

Guler has contributed significantly to Madrid’s attack with three goals and three assists in eight LaLiga games so far. He has forged an outstanding partnership with Kylian Mbappé, who now leads the team’s scoring statistics.

In an interview with L’Équipe Magazine, Guler expressed his respect for Mbappé and described how their synergy on the field is so effective.

Their relationship has been compared to that of one of football’s most famous duos, Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo. Guler acknowledged that he recognises these similarities but maintains his sense of reality.

“Some say he drops back too much into midfield, but I think we should let him play wherever he wants. His talent should be given free rein. If he moves into midfield and drops back a little, it’s not for nothing. He has the knowledge to do that, he understands the demands of the game.”

He also explained why they connect so well with each other on the field. “His qualities and mine are in harmony,” he said. “We understand each other well, the relationship is smooth. Sometimes we talk before the game and say, ‘Today, we have to do this or that.’ And sometimes, a glance is enough.

“I like the comparisons between Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil and Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler. They’ve achieved great things, but significant success is always achieved by a team, never just two players.”

Under Alonso, Guler has flourished brilliantly and continues to deliver spectacular performances since he has been given more time on the pitch. He has also gelled smoothly with Mbappe, as the duo’s understanding on the pitch has only become stronger.

Mbappe is enjoying the form of his life this season and has already scored 14 goals across all competitions this season. Meanwhile, a good number of those assists have come from Guler, which has seen their partnership being compared to Ronaldo and Ozil’s.

It will be interesting to see how their partnership on the field evolves further, as we are still in the beginning of the season, and both will be motivated to lead the club to trophies.

“Winning the Champions League once? What we’ve achieved doesn’t count for me, we have to go for another title,” said the Real Madrid star.
