Argentina are eyeing their 16th title, whilst Colombia are eyeing their 2nd title.
Raphael Claus will officiate the Copa America final early on Monday morning. A few years ago, Claus and Lionel Messi got into a furious altercation.
Argentina, led by Messi, is poised to make even more history as they attempt to become the first team to defend the Copa America title after winning the World Cup.
Following Uruguay’s intense semifinal match, in which Jefferson Lerma of Crystal Palace scored the game’s lone goal. The choice to assign a Brazilian referee to oversee a crucial Argentina match has also left fans perplexed, considering the deep-rooted animosity between the two dominant South American football teams.
On social media, a fan drew attention to the fact that Brazil have used Argentinean officials twice this year in the competition.
Since 2015, Claus has served as a senior international referee and is recognised as one of the best officials on the continent. At the 2022 World Cup, the 44-year-old managed two group-stage matches, including England’s opening decisive victory over Iran in Qatar. Earlier in the competition, he supervised the group-stage match between Venezuela and Mexico without any problems.
