Although it’s a team sport, these Argentine players stood out.

In their attempt to successfully retain their continental title, defending champions Argentina are all set to lock horns with Colombia in the Copa America 2024 final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.

On their route to the final, Lionel Scaloni’s side finished the group stage phase as Group A table-toppers, defeating the likes of Canada, Chile, and Peru in the process.

During the decisive knockout rounds, Argentina emerged victorious against a resolute Ecuador in the quarterfinals after a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win 1-1 (4-2), courtesy of the heroics of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Martinez delivered the goods yet again during the penalty shootouts with his two consecutive penalty saves, as La Albiceleste survived a major scare.

In the semifinal stage, Argentina recorded a solid 2-0 win against Canada through goals from Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi to book their place in yet another Copa America final.

With all that said, here are the top three Argentine players who impressed at Copa America 2024:

3. Alexis Mac Allister

One of the most reliable performers for Argentina in Copa America 2024 has been Alexis Mac Allister. He has been a vital player in the midfield due to his incredible all-round game through which he contributed on both ends of the pitch, in defence as well as attack.

Throughout the competition, Mac Allister boasted an impressive passing accuracy that enabled La Albiceleste to control the matches via strong possession and build attacks effectively. With his world-class vision and passing range, the 25-year-old Argentine midfielder has registered two assists in the tournament.

On the defensive side of the game too, Alexis Mac Allister has contributed massively to Argentina’s overall defensive solidity by covering a lot of ground, tracking back during counterattacks, challenging for tackles, and winning duels.

2. Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero has been a rock at the back for Argentina throughout the 2024 Copa America. Alongside Lisandro Martinez, Romero has formed a formidable defensive partnership that has enabled Lionel Scaloni’s side to record an incredible four clean sheets and concede just a single goal in the process.

The 26-year-old defender has been the top performer in all key defensive stats, such as the number of clearances, interceptions, and tackles won throughout the competition.

Romero has been a vocal leader in defence, keeping the backline composed throughout matches and constantly organising the defensive shape in order to structure as an impenetrable, robust unit for opponents.

Cristian Romero’s defensive leadership and solidity have made him one of the standout players of the tournament, with his consistent world-class performances earning him a well-deserved spot in the Copa America 2024 Team of the Tournament by several pundits.

1. Lautaro Martinez

Despite his limited game time, Lautaro Martinez has undoubtedly been Argentina’s most influential player on the pitch throughout the tournament. With his appearances primarily coming as a substitute, Martinez has been on fire this Copa America, scoring a whopping four goals as a result of which he is currently the top scorer in the competition.

The 26-year-old striker has showcased exceptional finishing prowess through his composed and clinical displays in front of goal, making him a lethal weapon in attack. Along with his hot goal-scoring form, Martinez has showcased strong overall play, making him a tough striker to contain for opposition defences. He is currently the frontrunner to win the Golden Boot for Copa America 2024.

In a closely contested final against in-form Colombia, Lautaro Martinez’s incredible goal-scoring instincts could prove to be the ultimate difference-maker in La Albiceleste securing the win and clinching a record 16th Copa America crown this summer.
