Diego Simeone’s side started their pre-season run with a defeat.
Atletico Madrid are one of the well-known clubs in Europe, despite not winning many trophies. They do have a good number of titles to their name, but they have not clinched any in recent times.
The LaLiga giants did not have a very positive 2024-25 campaign. They did come up with some impressive performances, but failed to win any of the domestic competitions. The last won the Spanish league title in 2020-21.
In the UEFA Champions League, the Diego Simeone-led side were eliminated by their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, in the round of 16. But they will get to compete in the next edition of the European competition as well due to their third-place finish in the LaLiga.
They fell to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semifinal. It was a good performance, but it was not good enough to take down the Blaugrana.
Ateltico Madrid were also given a chance on the world stage. But their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 campaign did not last long. They failed to make it to the playoff stage of the mega competition after their average performances in the group stage.
For the upcoming season, they will be looking to step up and have accordingly made lineup changes. Their midfield sensation Rodrigo de Paul has joined MLS side Inter Miami on loan.
They have added players like David Hancko, Marc Pubill and others to the squad, which will most likely bring a balance to the team.
It will not be interesting to see the strategies opted by Diego Simeone, who in recent times has struggled to win trophies with Atletico Madrid. They do have a capable lineup and a better strategy will be a big confidence booster for the squad.
In their recent pre-season friendly, they locked horns with FC Porto and the Portugal-based side outplayed Atletico Madrid to secure a win. They will play another friendly, in which they have to do better, as the new season is about to start.
