Austria are now on equal points with France and Netherlands.

Austria defeated Poland 3-1 in Group D play in Berlin to maintain their hopes of qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024. Christoph Baumgartner of RB Leipzig completed a brilliant team play halfway through the second half by scoring the game’s winning goal. Poland are out after losing for the second time in a row.

The Austrians got off to a fierce start and are currently up to three points from two games, which is as many as France and the Netherlands. They play later on Friday. In the ninth minute, Gernot Trauner’s strong header at the near post gave Ralf Rangnick’s side the lead.

After Poland’s initial effort in the box was stopped at the half-hour mark, Krzysztof Piatek’s second shot in the box equalised the score. Poland have since lost both of their matches.

Austria added two additional goals in the 66th and 78th minutes, respectively, after a skilful move and finish by Christoph Baumgartner barely outside the box and through a penalty kick by Marco Arnautovic.

Poland pushed for a victory that would have increased their chances of qualifying, but they are currently facing an early departure, sitting on two losses ahead of a final Group D match against France. Robert Lewandowski, not yet totally fit after injury, came on the hour mark.

Austria, on the other hand, knows that a draw with the Netherlands will most likely be sufficient to advance, and a victory will secure a top-two finish in Euro 2024 Group D.
