Austria will be among the underdogs in the competition.
The most recent country to announce their 26-man World Cup team for 2026 is Austria, one of the dark horses competing in the World Cup next month.
Austria’s first World Cup appearance since 1998 will be led by Ralf Rangnick. The last time they made it out of the group stage was way back in 1978, while it will take some effort to match their third-place finish in 1954.
The only player from an English team is Kevin Danso of Tottenham, but players like Real Madrid’s David Alaba, Borussia Dortmund’s Marcel Sabitzer, and former Stoke City and West Ham striker Marko Arnautović all draw attention.
With 14 of the 26 players playing in German leagues, the Austrian team has a decidedly German vibe. Nine players have at least 50 caps for their nation; there is a wealth of experience throughout.
However, some are concerned about the squad’s lack of youth. Only two players under the age of 23 have been chosen, which could be a challenge for the Das Nationalteam in the future, given the concerning dearth of talent emerging from the ranks.
But Rangnick’s side will be poised to challenge for the knockout spot in the competition, despite their group having many top nations. They will begin their World Cup campaign against Jordan.
