Austria will start their World Cup 2026 campaign against Jordan.
Austria had an excellent UEFA World Cup qualifying campaign, winning six, drawing one, and losing only one of their eight games in Group H.
They finished first in the rankings and qualified for the World Cup, thanks to a crucial 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last match. It included a 77th-minute equaliser from Michael Gregoritsch.
Das Team and Jordan will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns in Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium.
For the first time since 1998, Austria, under the leadership of Ralf Rangnick, is returning to the World Cup. The players hope to celebrate with a victory here.
This is a dark horse that has the potential to cause issues for some of Europe’s top teams, not an underdog. Das Team won’t be easily defeated, but a deep run this summer might be too much.
Since his arrival in 2022, Rangnick has revolutionised Austrian football. The team should benefit greatly from their unity.
Austria’s confirmed lineup vs Jordan
Influential midfielder Christoph Baumgartner was forced to withdraw from the squad before the competition, prompting Rangnick to reconsider his attack strategy.
Das Team were concerned about the fitness of star defender David Alaba. He was battling an injury. But the outgoing Real Madrid centre back likely passed a late fitness test and will join the back line.
Carney Chukwuemeka, a Borussia Dortmund midfielder who previously played for Chelsea and Aston Villa, is gearing up for his first major event since leaving England earlier this year and is on the bench.
Austria predicted lineup (3-4-2-1): A. Schlager; Posch, Lienhart, Alaba; Mwene X. Schalger, Seiwald, Laimer; Schmid, Sabitzer; Kalajdzic.
Substitutes: Pentz, Wiegele, Affengruber, Danso, Friedi, Svoboda, Grillitsch, Ljubicic, Chukwuemeka, Schopf, Wanner, Prass, Wimmer, Arnautovic, Gregoritsch
