The Polish striker’s contract with the club will expire at end of next season.
According to reports from Cadena SER, club president Joan Laporta has said that Julian Alvarez has jumped ahead of other targets like Rafael Leao.
Alvarez is the clear choice Barcelona have made on who will be in charge of their front line following Robert Lewandowski’s departure. Club president Joan Laporta has reportedly stated that Alvarez has leapt ahead of other targets, such as Rafael Leao, according to Cadena SER reports.
Instead of signing him right now, the intention is to wait until 2026–2027, when Lewandowski’s current contract expires and he is anticipated to depart the team.
Despite being 36 years old, the Polish superstar continues to deliver top-notch performances. His contribution to the squad is still unparalleled, as he has scored 42 goals this season in all competitions during the 2024–25 campaign. But the Catalan powerhouses are planning forward and are aware that they will want a striker with comparable ability.
Alvarez, former striker for Manchester City, scored 29 goals in all competitions during his stellar season at Atletico Madrid. Signing him won’t be simple, though.
Atletico secured him by paying his release clause worth around €75 million (£63 million/$86 million). Enrique Cerezo, their president, has previously declared that Alvarez is not for sale.
Champions of LaLiga. Throughout the upcoming season, Barca will keep a careful eye on the Argentine striker as they keep reestablishing their financial position and search for Lewandowski’s replacement.
Alvarez’s agent talked about Barcelona’s interest
Atletico Madrid forward Julián Alvarez’s agent has hinted at interest in a move to Barcelona, a competitor in LaLiga, by emphasising his client’s affection for the Catalan team.
Fernando Hidalgo, who represents Alvarez, has fueled rumours of a Barcelona transfer by speaking candidly when El Chiringuito asked him a question.
“Does Alvarez like Barça? Yes, yes, of course, he admires Spanish clubs,” Hildalgo said.
“Having followed [Lionel] Messi’s career since he was a child, it’s clear that there are few Argentinians who don’t feel something for Barça, especially given Barça’s performance this season.”
