LaLiga wants both clubs to play the league game in the USA.

There is a greater chance than ever to see an official LaLiga match in the United States. The plan for the match between Villarreal and Barcelona, which is scheduled originally for December 20, 2025, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, will be discussed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday.

Being the first league game from a major European competition to be played in the United States, the location change would be a historic occasion.

LaLiga has reportedly initiated initial discussions to reschedule the game, which was initially scheduled to take place at the Estadio de la Cerámica, according to The Athletic. Although this concept is not new, the RFEF has previously strongly opposed it.

The idea has been given new life after FIFA recently approved permitting national league games to be played outside of their native countries.

The subject will be one of the main topics of discussion at the next meeting of the RFEF Board of Directors. If accepted, formalisation of the move will start, and the Assembly will then be consulted. If this location change gets approved, it will open the door for upcoming official LaLiga matches to be played in other nations.

An official match in Miami would be a calculated effort by LaLiga to increase its market share in the United States, where FC Barcelona have a sizable fan base. It would be a rare chance for American fans to see players like Ronald Araújo, Lamine Yamal, or Robert Lewandowski play in a formal match without having to go to Spain.

The commercial appeal is clear for Barca. Florida is home to a sizable Spanish-speaking community, a vibrant football fan base, and a cutting-edge stadium that can accommodate an extremely high-level event.
