Barca have a four-point advantage in league standings over second-placed Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona go into Sunday’s home game at Spotify Camp Nou with a real sense of urgency in the title race. They host Rayo Vallecano on 22 March 2026, with the game kicking off at 13:00 UTC.

Hansi Flick’s men are currently four points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the table. With the season hitting its final stretch, they really can’t afford to drop points now.

The Catalans are in great form right now. They recently tore Newcastle United apart with a 7-2 win in the Champions League, moving on to the quarter-finals to face Atlético Madrid after an 8-3 aggregate score in the round of 16. Back home, Barcelona put five past Sevilla in their last league game, marking their fourth straight win in LaLiga.

Rayo Vallecano are in a much tougher spot. They sit 14th with 32 points, just four points clear of the relegation zone. That said, they haven’t lost in their last six league matches, so they have some momentum.

They also managed to move forward in the Conference League despite a 1-0 loss to Samsunspor in their second leg. Winning 3-2 on aggregate has given the squad a nice boost in confidence across different competitions.

Flick has a tough but welcome choice to make this Sunday. Gavi finally returned from his knee injury against Sevilla, coming off the bench to give the team a spark they had missed for months.

Lewandowski scored twice against Newcastle and looks sharp. Flick will likely stick with Roony, Dani Olmo and Raphinha behind him, giving Yamal and Fermin the rest they need. On top of that, having players like Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford on the bench is a massive advantage. It means Flick can shuffle his lineup without the quality dropping off.

Rayo have their own drama to deal with. Nobel Mendy is out after picking up a red card in the draw with Levante, which leaves a hole in their midfield. Still, Íñigo Pérez won’t just park the bus at Camp Nou.

Rayo famously won there in 2022 and kept it close last season. They don’t seem intimidated by the venue. Their ability to move on in Europe despite a home loss shows they can keep their heads when things get intense.

Players to Watch:

Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona)

Even at 37, Lewandowski plays like he is in his prime. He’s bagged 11 goals and an assist in 23 league games this season. He’s also been incredibly efficient in the air, scoring three headers despite very few clear chances.

Since Barcelona love to whip crosses into the box, Rayo’s defenders are going to have their hands full with him all afternoon.

Jorge de Frutos (Rayo Vallecano)

De Frutos is easily Rayo’s biggest threat. He’s scored 10 goals this season, more than double anyone else in the squad. Rayo’s counter-attacking game basically revolves around him.

If they’re going to pull off an upset, they’ll need him to be at his best when they try to catch Barca’s high backline sleeping.

Match Facts:

  • Rayo held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw back in August. The fact that Flick’s side couldn’t win that game shows that Rayo know how to make life difficult for them.
  • Between 2021 and 2023, Rayo actually went five games without losing to Barça. They even won three of those, proving they aren’t just there to make up the numbers.
  • History favours Barcelona with 131 goals in 48 meetings, but their last three games saw them only score four goals. It’s a good reminder that past stats don’t always predict a high-scoring game.

Betting tips and odds

  • Tip 1: Barca to win
  • Tip 2: Lewandowski to score
  • Tip 3: Expected Goals – Over 2.5

Injuries and Team News:

Barcelona are dealing with a pretty long injury list. Eric Garcia is a doubt with a hamstring problem, while Marcos Fernández is out with an ankle injury until the end of the month. Alejandro Balde won’t be back until mid-April.

Christensen is out indefinitely with a serious knee injury. Torrents, Koundé, and Frenkie de Jong are also sidelined, though the latter two might return in late March.

Rayo are in much better shape, missing only the suspended Nobel Mendy.

Predicted Starting Lineups

Barcelona Predicted Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1):

Wojciech Szczęsny; Xavi Espart, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, João Cancelo; Marc Bernal, Pedri; Rony Bardghji, Dani Olmo, Raphinha; Robert Lewandowski.

Rayo Vallecano Predicted Starting Lineup (4-3-3):

Augusto Batalla; Iván Balliu, Florian Lejeune, Pathé Ciss, Pacha Espino; Gerard Gumbau, Óscar Valentín, Pedro Díaz; Jorge de Frutos, Alemão, Fran Pérez.

Match Prediction:

Barcelona simply have too much firepower. Rayo are missing a key man in midfield with Mendy out, which should make it harder for them to stay organised defensively.

Rayo are on a decent run, but it’s hard to see them stopping a team that scores three goals a game at home. A 3-1 win for Barcelona looks likely, and Lewandowski will almost certainly find the net.

Prediction: Barcelona 3-1 Rayo Vallecano
