Matip is now a free agent after his deal expired with Liverpool.

Bayer Leverkusen have shown interest in signing Joel Matip, who became a free agent after his deal with Liverpool expired last month, as Xabi Alonso aims to add a more experienced centre-back to his roster for the upcoming season.

With the exit of manager Jurgen Klopp, after nine years in the position and the departure of several key players whose contracts ended, Anfield has seen tremendous change this summer.

Important players for Liverpool in the past few years have already found new homes, with Adrian moving to Real Betis and Thiago Alcantara ending his playing career to join FC Barcelona’s coaching staff.

With big changes in the squad, many more are certain to leave the club in the summer. Matip, who barely played last season, now already has an offer on the table.

Joel Matip, a Cameroonian centre-back, has reportedly discussed a possible deal to join Leverkusen, as reported by Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Many Liverpool fans will be thrilled to hear that Matip is close to signing with the Bundesliga powerhouse and playing under one of the Reds’ greats Alonso.

The German league has always seemed like an ideal place for Matip to land, who spent his formative years there. If he joins the Bundesliga‘s current champions, the centre-back may be in for another amazing journey.

Matip, who was once praised as “unbelievable” by Virgil van Dijk, is talented enough to play at the highest level in Europe and for one of the top teams, Leverkusen.

If the negotiations go through, it may be a great opportunity for all sides involved – Matip gets to play for one of the finest teams in Europe again and Alonso gets to sign a top defender who can be relied upon in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League for the 2024-25 season.
