France have defeated Belgium in tournament matches in last two times.

Belgium, under Domenico Tedesco, seek to avenge past defeats to France they suffered in the knockout stages. The 1-0 loss in the 2018 World Cup semi-final, followed by a 3-2 defeat in the 2021 Nations League semi-final, surely the Red Devils cannot succumb again…

With an equally horrendous group-stage performance as their upcoming opponents, Belgium face even bigger issues. They only narrowly qualified as runners-up in their group after a poor 0-0 draw against Ukraine, sneaking through in second place behind Romania thanks to a superior goal difference. Tedesco has many problems to address if his team has a chance against a star-studded French team touted to win the European Championship.

Here’s the XI that Tedesco might lay out, hoping to outclass Deschamps’s tactics in the attacking third of the field.

Belgium’s predicted lineup (4-2-3-1)

GK: Koen Casteels

Casteels over Sels, in the absence of Courtois, raised many eyebrows but the Ukraine game has got the eyebrows down and ovations up. While Ukraine’s finishing was off, Casteels still made some quality saves with what was coming at him. Dragging the team to the Ro16. He has been secure between the sticks but a harder challenge of the French attack awaits.

RB: Timothy Castagne

Timothy Castagne has had mixed performances in the tournament, attempting 145 passes with an 85% accuracy over 3 matches. With Tedesco aiming to enhance the team’s offense, Castagne will be tasked with pushing forward and delivering more crosses.

CB: Wout Faes

For Leicester City defender Faes, this experience has been a valuable learning curve that will benefit him in the long run. Since making his breakthrough in the national team in 2021, he has made 16 appearances but is yet to score.

CB: Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen has been a vital player in the defence for the Red Devils over the years. He still has the attributes to lead the team to glory. Vertonghen, with over 154 appearances and 10 goals for the team, can be dangerous from set-pieces, because of his tall demeanour and physique, to score vital goals.

LB: Arthur Theate

Arthur Theate has eased into LB role after Carrasco’s initial struggles. This is a great opportunity for Theate to put his skills on show for the world to see, having had a strong season with Rennes -scored 2 goals in 28 appearances. He is a rock-solid defender, strong in attacks, and unafraid to make challenges.

CDM: Youri Tielemans

The Villan is yet to impact games in his trademark style – line-up a banging equaliser or winner from outside-of-the-box. Tielemans is likely the more attack-minded of Belgium’s two midfielders as he can score thunderous lon-range goals. just because of his ability to score. He is also known for his ability to score from free kicks. This season, he made 46 appearances for Aston Villa, scoring 3 goals and assisting 7.

CDM: Amadou Onana

Amadou Onana is replicating his Everton season with Belgium. And that is what the fans love to see. He has been having a busy summer in the middle of the park for the team, helping the defence with his timely tackles and interceptions. He can be a dangerous outlet from set-pieces as his tall physique allows him to rise above the rest.

RM: Jeremy Doku

Jérémy Doku has had an underwhelming Euros thus far. Great things were expected out of him, especially, after his exploits with Man City, where he helped win the Premier League on the last day, scoring 6 goals and providing 9 assists in his debut season. But the talent has been on show, and their have been glimpses of greatness.

CAM: Kevin De Bruyne

Arguably one of the best midfielders of this generation, Kevin De Bruyne needs to overturn fans belief of him ‘ghosting’ in important games. De Bruyne had a good season with Manchester City, despite the injury keeping him out during the initial games of the season, scoring 6 goals and providing 17 assists for the team.

LM: Yannick Carrasco

Carrasco has a simple yet daunting tasks of making sure his tournament experience goes well with the team, while paving the way for the next generation stars to the mantle. The formar Atletico Madrid player is playing in his 4th major tournament.

ST: Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku scored a whopping 21 goals and provided another 4 assists in just 47 appearances for Roma, on loan, this season. However, he is yet to break the deadlock in the Euros. And his team would hope for him to find his shooting boots against the mighty French.
