Belgium will aim to register their first victory of the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament when they face Iran in a crucial Group G encounter.

Belgium enter their second FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage fixture knowing there is little margin for error. This match comes after a 1-1 draw with Egypt in their opening game. Despite controlling large spells of possession and creating several opportunities, the European side were unable to convert their dominance into three points.

With Iran also drawing their first game against New Zealand, this clash has quickly become one of the most important fixtures in Group G. Rudi Garcia’s side still possesses a wealth of quality throughout the squad, combining experienced stars with emerging talents.

Against an Iranian team that showed resilience and attacking threat in their opener, Belgium will be expected to take the initiative and dictate proceedings from the outset.

Who all will be expected to be in the starting lineup?

Thibaut Courtois is expected to continue between the posts and remains one of Belgium’s most influential players. The experienced goalkeeper provides leadership, composure and world-class shot-stopping ability, making him a vital figure whenever Belgium come under pressure.

Thomas Meunier is likely to start at right-back, where his experience and attacking instincts can help Belgium create overloads in wide areas. On the opposite flank, Maxim De Cuyper offers energy and creativity. He can frequently push forward to support attacking moves while maintaining defensive responsibility.

At the heart of the defence, Nathan Ngoy and Brandon Mechele are expected to form the central partnership. Ngoy brings athleticism and recovery pace, while Mechele’s positioning and aerial presence provide stability. The duo will be tasked with dealing with Iran’s direct attacking approach and preventing dangerous transitions.

Belgium’s midfield remains one of the strongest areas of the squad. Amadou Onana is expected to provide the physical presence and defensive protection required in central areas. His ability to win duels and recover possession allows Belgium to maintain territorial control.

Alongside him, Youri Tielemans will be responsible for progressing the ball and dictating the rhythm of play. His passing range and vision make him one of Belgium’s most important creative outlets from deeper positions.

Belgium’s attacking unit is expected to feature an abundance of creativity and technical quality. Leandro Trossard is likely to operate from the left side, where his intelligent movement and ability to drift into central areas can create problems for defenders. On the opposite flank, Jérémy Doku provides explosive pace and dribbling ability, making him a constant threat in one-on-one situations.

Kevin De Bruyne is expected to occupy the central attacking role behind the striker. The captain remains Belgium’s chief playmaker. He will look to unlock Iran’s defensive structure through his passing, vision and decision-making in the final third.

Leading the attack should be Charles De Ketelaere. The versatile forward offers movement, technical quality and an eye for goal. He will give Belgium a focal point capable of linking play while also threatening inside the penalty area.
