Romelu Lukaku #9 of Belgium celebrates with Kevin De Bruyne #7 Belgium FIFA World Cup

Belgium were unbeaten in the group stage and finished first in Group G.

Group stages in any FIFA World Cup give us a rough idea about every team. Now it is the knockout stage where even the bigger sides have struggled and succumbed to pressure. Belgium and Senegal will line up at the Seattle Stadium knowing that they are both underdogs in this tournament.

However, not having a lot of expectations on their shoulders might be a good thing for both nations. It will give the players a chance to not be conservative.

Here are five key player battles in the Belgium vs Senegal game that could define this FIFA World Cup 2026 fixture.

5. Kevin De Bruyne vs Idrisswa Gueye

Both players are likely playing in their last FIFA World Cup. This tussle in midfield could define this game.

Kevin De Bruyne scored against New Zealand for Belgium. The Napoli star has taken 16 shots in this World Cup so far. The 35-year-old has also made 10 recoveries and will be their most important player.

On the other hand, Idrissa Gueye is still going strong at the age of 36. The Everton player has an 88.9% successful pass percentage and has also won 13 duels in the midfield.

Both players are game changers and will be constantly going up against each other in the midfield.

4. Romelu Lukaku vs Moussa Niakhate

Romelu Lukaku was introduced as a substitute quite late against New Zealand. He still scored a goal and managed to assist Saelemaekers. Similarly, Lukaku’s introduction against Egypt was pivotal to secure Belgium a point in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 game.

Since Lukaku is not fully fit, it has to be seen if he will start against Senegal. Nevertheless, whenever he comes on, the Belgian will be a headache to manage for Senegal’s centreback Moussa Niakhate.

The Lyon defender has made 17 defensive contributions in this tournament. He would have to be at his very best against Belgium’s all-time top scorer.

3. Leandro Trossard vs Krepin Diatta

With Romelu Lukaku not at full fitness, Leandro Trossard is potentially Belgium’s biggest goalscoring option. The Arsenal star scored twice against New Zealand. He has taken 11 shots in three World Cup 2026 games.

Trossard has also won 16 duels. He has been at his dribbling best on the left wing.

Krepin Diatta, Senegal’s right back, will have his hands full against Trossard. The 27-year-old has made 14 defensive contributions, nine tackles, and 19 recoveries in this tournament so far. His teammates will be hoping for a top-notch performance from Krepin once again.

2. Brandon Mechele vs Ismaila Sarr

Brandon Mechele will be tasked with keeping the Senegal forward away from the Belgium goal. The centreback has 26 defensive contributions to his name in the group stage. He has also contributed with 12 recoveries and 19 clearances.

Ismaila Sarr is Senegal’s top scorer in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with three goals and one assist in the group stage. The Crystal Palace player has been sharp in front of goal. He has taken 12 shots in the tournament so far.

1. Timothy Castagne vs Sadio Mane

Timothy Castagne has made 16 defensive contributions in this World Cup. The Fulham player will be marking Mane closely. The Senegalese player will have an advantage over him in pace. Things might become tough for Castagne if he picks up an early yellow card.

Sadio Mane

Aged 34, Sadio Mane is still the most influential player in the Senegal squad. His 2025-26 season with Al Nassr clearly showed that he is still at his best.

The winger can torment defenders with his pace. He will be keen to score his first goal of the tournament.
