The Bundesliga was at its competitive best in the 2023-24 season.

With the 2024-25 Bundesliga campaign fast approaching, all the German clubs are almost finishing their pre-season preparations. They also have been proactive in the summer transfer window in order to bolster their respective squads.

The Bundesliga was at its competitive best last season, with Bayer Leverkusen finally clinching their first-ever league title and VfB Stuttgart overcoming Bayern Munich to finish second. Due to this, the German top division is currently one of the top five leagues in the world.

In addition, the Bundesliga is also home to some of the most talented managers in world football who have achieved incredible success with their respective clubs through their impressive style of play. With that said, here are the top five best managers in the Bundesliga 2024-25 season:

5. Vincent Kompany (Bayern Munich)

Following a disastrous campaign last season, the Bayern Munich board made the bold managerial appointment of Vincent Kompany in the summer in order to steer the club back to the pinnacle of domestic and European football.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League with Burnley, Kompany’s name started to get linked with the vacant Bayern job, which undoubtedly raised many eyebrows. Owing to his positive and attacking brand of football, the 38-year-old Belgian was ultimately appointed as the first-team head coach of the German giants.

Vincent Kompany grew to prominence as a manager due to his stellar debut campaign with Burnley in the 2022–23 EFL Championship, where he guided the club to automatic Premier League promotion by winning the Championship with a record-breaking 101 points.

4. Frank Schmidt (Heidenheim)

Having won promotion to the Bundesliga last season itself, Frank Schmidt’s Heidenheim surpassed all expectations as they secured an incredible top-half finish in the league, finishing eighth place in the process.

Having been Heidenheim’s first team head coach since 2007, Schmidt has successfully guided the club through various levels of the German football pyramid all the way to the first division. Owing to his astute tactical gameplan and impressive man-management skills, the 50-year-old German is currently the longest-reigning manager in the Bundesliga.

With his current club contract running until 2027, Frank Schmidt will be hoping to achieve more unbelievable feats with Heidenheim in the upcoming season.

3. Marco Rose (RB Leipzig)

Current RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose has been one of the household names in the Bundesliga owing to his previous managerial spells at Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

During the 2023-24 season, Leipzig finished fourth in the Bundesliga, securing Champions League football for yet another campaign. In addition, with Rose’s attacking style of football, Leipzig reached the final of the German Super Cup and the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

In the upcoming 2024-25 campaign, the RB Leipzig hierarchy will hope that Marco Rose can guide the club towards potential silverware.

2. Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart)

One of the most incredible underdog stories of club football last season was that of German side VfB Stuttgart, which, against all the odds, finished second in the Bundesliga, securing Champions League football in the process. The mastermind behind the club’s unbelievable achievement was their talented young head coach, Sebastian Hoeneß.

Having been appointed as the Stuttgart manager towards the end of the 2022–23 season, Hoeneß initially guided the club out of the relegation zone to Bundesliga safety. However, in his first full campaign last season, the 42-year-old German implemented an exciting brand of football that enabled Stuttgart to topple several top teams and finish second in the league.

With the club already losing several key players, such as top scorer Serhou Guirassy, captain Waldemar Anton and star defender Hiroki Ito, Sebastian Hoeneß will have a monumental task at hand to successfully guide Stuttgart through the action-packed upcoming season.

1. Xabi Alonso (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)

In his mere two years in charge as the Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso guided the German club from the relegation zone to their first-ever Bundesliga title in history last season.

Under Alonso, Leverkusen recorded an unprecedented 51-match unbeaten streak, claiming the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal Cup in the process, while also reaching the UEFA Europa League final.

Leverkusen dominated almost every game with their fluid attacking brand of football, which cemented their status as one of the best teams in the world. Owing to the incredible achievements in his first managerial role, the 42-year-old Spaniard was on the radar of several European giants this summer, such as Real Madrid and Liverpool.

However, with Xabi Alonso committing his future to the club, Bayer Leverkusen could potentially enjoy yet another stellar campaign in the upcoming season.
