Despite not conquering the world stage or winning the Golden Ball, Neymar has still made it to the top 10 greatest players of Brazil list. He helped A Selecao in their Confederations Cup triumph in 2013 and then led them to an Olympic gold medal in 2016. Having scored 79 goals in 128 appearances, Neymar is the all-time top goalscorer for Brazil.

His consistent injuries in the recent time has surely been a problem. Anyhow, he has been included to compete for the national team in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

8. Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva is considered one of the top defensive leaders to ever play for the Brazilian national football team. He has led A Selecao in four editions of the FIFA World Cup (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022). Even though they failed to clinch the world stage during those editions, Silva’s performances across the four tournaments were very noticeable.

7. Jairzinho

With his fast feet down the right flank, Jairzinho was nicknamed ‘The Hurricane’. He also went on to form a strong attacking front with Pele and Tostao. He was also considered one of the brightest stars in Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning squad.

He scored a crucial goal and helped his side knock out the defending 1966 champions, England, from the competition. Jairzinho became the only player to score in every match while chasing the mega prize.

6. Romario

Romario has 55 goals in 70 appearances for the Brazil national football team. This makes him the fourth all-time top scorer for A Selecao. He was one of the top stars during the 1994 World Cup.

This also led him to secure the Player of the Tournament award. He was a clinical finisher with strong natural ability. Romario also went on to win league titles with Vasco da Gama, PSV and Barcelona.

5. Socrates

Socrates formed a strong midfield line with Zico, Eder and Falcao. He was also one of the top stars in Brazil’s strongest team ever during the 1982 World Cup. Socrates put in one of his best performances against Italy on the grandest stage of them all, but it was not enough for A Selecao to get a win.

He made a major impact off the field as well. He had a degree in medicine, which also helped him to earn the nickname ‘doctor’.

4. Ronaldinho

Ronaldinho was a genius on the field. His performances for FC Barcelona from 2005-08 made him a magician in the eyes of his supporters. He clinched the World Cup trophy in 2002 with Brazil.

Ronaldinho then went on to score 50 goals for Barca in two seasons. He bagged the Ballon d’Or in 2005 after the Blaugrana’s triumph in the Champions League.

3. Ronaldo Nazário

He is considered the greatest striker to play the sport in the modern era. Even though Ronaldo Nazário was included in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup in 1994, he wasn’t given a chance to be on the field. Just two years later, he clinched the FIFA World Player of the Year award with his phenomenal performances on the pitch for both his clubs and country.

Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or two times (1997 and 2002). He also has two World Cup Golden Boots to his name (1998 and 2002).

2. Garrincha

Garrincha made his debut alongside Pele in 1958. His name was quickly etched into his reputation as the best dribbler in the world. He was the main provider of goals to his teammate, Pele.

Garrincha was called a ‘Bent-Legged Angel’ due to his crooked spine and uneven legs. He was one of the major contributers for Brazil’s World Cup triumph in 1958. With his exceptional skills on the field, Garrincha was feared by the defenders.

1. Pele

Pele is considered one of the greatest players ever to have stepped foot on a football field. He scored six goals in his debut edition of the World Cup in 1958 and led the Brazil national football team to their first-ever World Cup title.

He never slowed down after that. Pele secured the flagship trophy with A Selecao in 1962 and 1970, making him the only player to have lifted three World Cups.

He won numerous titles during Santos’ golden era (1962-63). Pele retired, claiming 1,279 goals during his prestigious career.
