Brazil have remained unbeaten in the group stage.
Brazil entered the FIFA World Cup 2026 with the lofty expectations of being the game’s top team. Carlo Ancelotti’s men won Group C with Morocco, Scotland and Haiti to qualify for the knockout stage as the winners of the group.
The Selecao are still chasing their sixth FIFA World Cup title and first since they won the cup in South Korea and Japan in 2002. With the expanded 48-team format, Brazil will need to pull off five knockouts to become world champions.
Brazil have played defensively solid so far in the tournament and are undefeated in their 10 group stage matches. Vinicius Junior has been one of the highlights of the tournament so far, and Neymar made himself available as a shot-stopper for Ancelotti’s team.
The path to East Rutherford isn’t quite simple, though. Brazil’s side of the draw has several former world champions as well as some in-form outsiders that can wreak havoc deep in the tournament.
Brazil’s Round of 32 opponent: Japan

Brazil’s knockout campaign begins against Japan, who finished second in Group F behind the Netherlands. Japan went into the Round of 32 unbeaten through the group stage against Sweden and Tunisia.
The Asian side has already proved themselves against top-level opposition and conquered Brazil in an international friendly for the first time in their history, so this is one of the most interesting Round of 32 fixtures.

Brazil’s possible Round of 16 opponent: Norway or Ivory Coast
Should Brazil overcome Japan, they will face the winner of Norway and Ivory Coast in the Round of 16.
Norway will arrive with one of Europe’s most dangerous attacks led by Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard. Ivory Coast are one of Europe’s toughest groups and bring plenty of pace and physicality to the ground, but are also heavily reliant on their technical quality.

In the round of 32, the defending champions are expected to go up against Cape Verde. Following that, they may expect to play against the winner of either Egypt or Australia before meeting the winner of either Colombia or Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Brazil may also play against any of Colombia, Egypt or Switzerland if there are upsets in the earlier rounds.
