Canada is making their Copa America debut.

With the 2024 Copa América fast approaching, Team Canada is all set to make their inaugural appearance in the competition. A talented but inexperienced roster, Canada under American coach Jesse Marsch has everything to play for and little to lose during their debut run in the tournament.

Heading into the Copa América, they topped their World Cup qualifying group in CONCACAF, beating solid teams like Mexico and the United States in the process. They also held 2022 World Cup finalists France to a scoreless draw in a recent friendly in preparation for the tournament.

Even with their inexperience, this Jesse Marsch-coached side cannot be underestimated or taken lightly. A coach who demands his teams play on the front foot with positivity and aggression will ensure they give a tough game to all their opponents, irrespective of the opposition’s overall quality.

Captain Alphonso Davies will be tasked with managing both defensive and attacking duties for this side. A versatile player who can put in a world-class shift anywhere on the pitch will be instrumental to Canada’s success at this Copa América.

In the attacking department, Lille forward Jonathan David needs to be at his goal-scoring best to help Canada have a strong run in the tournament. The 24-year-old striker enjoyed an excellent season at his club, bagging 26 goals and nine assists across all competitions. Canadian fans will be hoping their young talisman can replicate his impressive club form for the national team at this Copa América.

The draw has been a tricky one for Canada, with them grouped alongside good teams like Chile, Peru and tournament favorites Argentina. A proper team effort with heart and grit will be required from this Canadian side to topple their group opponents and advance to the knockout rounds of the Copa América, after which everything is up for grabs for this talented group to achieve. Canada will face Argentina in their opening Group A fixture on June 21.
