Akram Afif will be eager to break his goalscoring duck in the FIFA World Cup

Group B in the FIFA World Cup 2026 is poised to go down to the wire. Canada, Switzerland, Bosnia, and Qatar are all on one point after match week 1. With both the opening games ending in a 1-1 draw, a win in matchweek 2 will be worth gold for all the nations.

Hosts Canada and Qatar will play each other at the Vancouver Stadium, and here are five key battles on the pitch that will decide this World Cup fixture.

Cyle Larin vs Pedro Miguel

Cyle Larin was the hero of the night for Canada in their World Cup opener against Switzerland. The forward came on as a substitute and scored the leveller for his nation barely two minutes later. Owing to his striker, it is likely that he will start for Canada against Qatar.

The man tasked to mark Larin will be Pedro Moguel. The 35-year-old had a decent game against Switzerland as he won 5/7 ground duels that he competed in. Miguel was the best defender on the night for his side and Qatar will be expecting a similar performance from their veteran.

Jonathan David vs Boualem Khoukhi

Like Cyle Larin became the hero for Canada, Qatar’s captain, Bohalem Khouki, was the saviour for his side against Switzerland. The centreback salvaged a draw in the dying minutes of the game, though the goal was eventually credited as an owl goal against Switzerland.

Defensively, too, Khoukhi was decent, and he would have to retain his swiftness and sturdiness once again, as he will be competing against Jonathan David in Matchweek 2. David, the Juventus forward, was relatively quiet against Bosnia, and he will be looking to make amends in the next match.

Tajon Buchanan vs Homam Elamin

Tajon Buchanan is a world-class option that Canada have as their right midfielder. The 27-year-old Villarreal player had a forgetful game against Bosnia last week and will be looking to overcome that.

Homam Elamin, the Qatar national team left-back, will be battling Buchanan on the pitch throughout the game. The 26-year-old did well against Switzerland, but he needs to improve his crossing and passing accuracy.

Alistair Johnston vs Akram Afif

Akram Afif is Qatar’s MVP, and he was quite active in gameweek 1, though he did not get a goal against Switzerland. The Al-Sadd player was dispossessed just once in the last game, and he will be backing himself to score against the hosts.

Canada’s Alistair Johnston will be playing against Afif, and he will have his task cut out. Johnston is currently playing with Celtic and has prior experience of playing in the United States, and this will give him a slight edge over the Qatar star man.

Richie Laryea vs Edmilson Junior

Edmilson Junior had two shots on target against Switzerland; however, he failed to score a goal in matchweek 1. The Qatar player also made three recoveries aside from helping his team’s attacking chances on the right wing.

Canada’s left-back Richie Larayea was his nation’s best player on the field over 90 minutes against Bosnia. The 31-year-old won all eight of his ground duels and also made four recoveries. His nation will be hoping that Laryea could put in a similar defensive shift once again.
