La Celeste suffered a 1-0 defeat in the semi-final and now will contest for the Bronze medal.

After a demoralizing start to their debut Copa America 2024 campaign, Canada turned the tables around and scripted a story to remember for the ages. The Reds became the only North American team to make it to the final four of the tournament alongside South American giants Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia.

After a 2-0 defeat to Argentina on opening day, Canada bounced back big time and became the surprise package of the tournament. They started with a 1-0 win over ten-man Peru before getting a 0-0 draw against Chile to wrap up their group-stage fixtures. They then pulled off a win over Venezuela in penalties and secured their first-ever semi-final berth in the competition, but fell short against the defending champions, Argentina.

Next up, they will go up against Uruguay in the third-place match on Sunday. Uruguay have been one of the most dominating sides in the tournament so far. They seemed like an unstoppable force under Marcelo Bielsa and had won every single game before bowing out to Colombia in the semi-final.

La Celeste defeated Panama, Bolivia and then hosts USA in their group stage fixtures before showing Brazil the exit door in the quarter-finals. They have scored nine goals in the Copa America 2024 tournament, the highest so far. Bielsa’s side did everything in their power to avoid defeat against Colombia, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Both teams will face off against each other after a heartbreaking defeat in the semi-finals. Uruguay and Canada have only come up against each other twice before this and both games have ended in favour of the South Americans. The first game finished in a 3-1 win for Uruguay in the Miami Cup back in 1986. The second game was an international friendly in 2022 where Diego Nicolas and Darwin Nunez helped Uruguay secure a 2-0 win.
