Cape Verde’s Vozinha gains over 1 million Instagram followers after FIFA World Cup 2026 heroics vs Spain

The goalkeeper has 1.5 million followers on Instagram at the time of writing.
Cape Verde secured a historic draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 clash against Spain tonight, and it was in no small part due to the heroics of their 40-year-old goalkeeper, Vozinha. The veteran shot-stopper earned global recognition after turning in the performance of a lifetime, effectively shutting out the glittering Spanish attack.
The Cape Verdean custodian was rightly named the Player of the Match for his heroics. He ended the match with seven saves to his name. Despite Spain having an expected goals (xG) of 2.29, they failed to breach their opposition’s goal.
Cape Verde’s draw against Spain will go down as one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history. Vozinha, who plays in Portugal’s second division with GD Chaves, became the oldest player to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.

Vozinha’s Instagram fame
The goalkeeper’s performance, which will go down in World Cup folklore, was also recognised by the fans. He had only 20,000 followers on his personal Instagram account at the start of the match. Impressed by his showing against Spain, Brazilian channel Caze TV’s star pundit, Casimiro Miguel, urged his viewers to help the goalkeeper reach 100,000 followers.
To say that the message resonated would be an understatement. By the hour mark in the match, the goalkeeper had crossed 350,000 followers. The count continued to increase, with the goalkeeper having more than a million followers by the end of the match.
Even though the match ended half an hour ago, the follower count has continued to rise, standing at 1.5 million at the time of writing. The Cape Verdean goalkeeper is still some way short of Lionel Messi’s record of 507 million Instagram followers. However, if the goalkeeper can pull off a similar performance during Cape Verde’s next match against Uruguay, you just never know!
