Club captain Sergi Roberto and FC Barcelona expected to part ways this summer
Sergi Roberto has been a loyal servant for the Blaugrana.
Club captain Sergi Roberto and FC Barcelona are expected to part ways this summer, with no agreement between the two sides on a potential contract extension.
After an 11-year spell as a first-team player for FC Barcelona, Roberto is now available as a free agent upon the expiration of his current contract in the month of June. He joined Barcelona’s famous youth academy, La Masia, in 2006 at the young age of 14 and has since spent his entire playing career at the Catalan club.
During this period, Sergi Roberto made a total of 373 first-team appearances, recording 19 goals and 43 assists in the process. He also enjoyed incredible success at the club, winning a staggering 22 trophies in total: Two UEFA Champions Leagues, one FIFA Club World Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, seven LaLiga titles, six Copa del Rey crowns and five Spanish Super Cups.
Roberto was also responsible for one of the most iconic moments in FC Barcelona’s history. Coming off the bench, he scored a last-gasp winner against PSG in the second leg of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League knockout rounds to complete a stunning 6-5 comeback win.
During the 2023–24 season, the 32-year-old versatile player made 24 appearances across all competitions, registering three goals and three assists in the process. Under former manager Xavi, Roberto was a key dressing room figure and operated in multiple positions on the pitch, such as central midfield and right-back.
In previous seasons, Roberto had earned one-year contract extensions from the club, as he was primarily used as an experienced rotational squad player who could deliver a solid shift anywhere on the pitch. Owing to his incredible performances and profound loyalty, Sergi Roberto was named the club captain last year.
Prior to Xavi’s sacking, Roberto was in concrete talks with the club hierarchy for yet another one-year contract extension. However, the appointment of Hansi Flick as the new manager by President Joan Laporta changed the dynamics of the contractual situation.
With Roberto being deemed surplus to requirements for the upcoming season, both parties are expected to part ways this summer.
Sergi Roberto has already received plenty of approaches as a free agent, including from teams in the Premier League. However, there is currently no agreement in place with any of the interested clubs.
