Colombia vs Portugal: Five key battles to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026

The winner of the Colombia vs Portugal match will top Group K
Colombia and Portugal will face off at the Miami Stadium to decide who will win Group K in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The South American nation has already qualified to the knockout stage whereas Cristiano Ronaldo and company can top the group if they beat Colombia.
With the stakes high, here are five key player battles on the pitch that would decide Colombia vs Portugal’s clash in Miami:
Daniel Munoz vs Joao Felix
Daniel Munoz, Colombia’s right-back is their top goalscorer in this FIFA World Cup with two goals in two group games. His winner against DR Congo has kept Colombia at the top of Group K ahead of their last game. Going up against Munoz will be Joao Felix, whose addition against Uzbekistan helped the team gel better.
Felix had three shots against Uzbekistan and is coming off a marvellous season with Al Nassr, having scored 20 goals and provided 13 assists in 33 games. Keep an eye out on both players as one mistake by either could cost their team in this high-voltage affair.
Davinson Sanchez vs Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is coming fresh off a brace against Uzbekistan. The 41-year-old took seven shots against the Asian side, out of which five were on target. Now that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has warmed up, he would be looking to carry on against Colombia.
Lining up in defence, Davinson Sanchez will be tasked to stop Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Tottenham Hotspur centreback currently laces his boots for Galatasaray. Davinson has had 15 defensive contributions and 10 recoveries in his two FIFA World Cup matches so far.
James Rodriguez vs Nuno Mendes
The veteran James Rodrigues is a certified ‘big tournament’ player. His contributions for Colombia in the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Copa America 2024 have already made him a national icon. While the 34-year-old is yet to make a telling contribution in this tournament, he may be primed to do so against Portugal.
Nuno Mendes scored a powerful freekick against Uzbekistan and has been outstanding in defence aside from his attacking contributions for Os Navagedores. With Nuno constantly attacking, James could be primed to make use of a defensive lapse and lead a counter attack for the Colombians.
Luis Diaz vs Joao Cancelo
Similar to Nuno Mendes, João Cancelo likes to overlap the wingers and help Portugal in attack. The right-back assisted Ronaldo’s opener against Uzbekistan before Roberto Martinez decided to rest him at halftime.
Luis Diaz has already opened his account in this World Cup with a goal and assist in Colombia’s tournament opener against Uzbekistan. The Bayern Munich player is in-form and will be his nation’s biggest attacking threat.
Jefferson Lerma vs Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes was the pick of the Portuguese midfield against Uzbekistan as the two-time Nations League winners ripped up their plans that they used against DR Congo. The midfielder completed 63 passes and assisted Ronaldo’s second goal in what was a positive game for Bruno.
Jefferson Lerma will be marking Bruno Fernandes, however, he would have to be careful as he has already received a yellow card earlier in the group stage. Another booking would mean that the defensive midfielder misses Colombia’s round of 32 match. The 31-year-old has made 12 recoveries and also has 10 defensive contributions in his two FIFA World Cup 2026 matches.
