The incredible journey of Como 1907 to Serie A
Como 1907 gained automatic promotion to Serie A.
One of the most incredible journeys in recent football history has been that of Italian side Como 1907, who won a dramatic final matchday promotion from Serie B to Serie A for the upcoming 2024–25 season. This achievement marked the club’s return to the top flight of Italian football after a dreaded 21-year hiatus.
During their promotion campaign last season, Como enjoyed a stunning run in Serie B, finishing second in the league, just three points behind champions Parma Calcio. They recorded impressive numbers of 73 points, 21 wins and just seven defeats, gaining automatic promotion to Serie A in the process.
The final day drama in Serie B and initial hurdles
However, their fate was undecided until their final game in the Italian second division. Como registered a thrilling 1-1 draw against Cosenza after striker Simone Verdi levelled the game from the spot to earn a vital point for his side. With third-place Venezia’s defeat to Spezia, a draw proved to be more than enough as Como 1907 were officially Serie A bound.
Como’s unbelievable rise to Serie A had its own set of obstacles, which they successfully managed to conquer in the long term. From overcoming bankruptcy problems to gaining three promotions in six years, all the way from Serie D. The Italian club have truly experienced it all. The collective work of the Djarum Group and its strategic appointments of former CEO Dennis Wise, coach Osian Roberts, and minor shareholders Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas, made this once far-fetched dream into a living reality for the Como faithful.
Mastermind manager Osian Roberts became the first Welsh coach to win promotion from Serie B to Serie A as he led a colossal turnaround for a club that had faced bankruptcy twice over the past two decades.
Spanish legend Cesc Fabregas initially joined the club as a player during the 2022–23 season, when the Biancoblu were entering their second campaign in Serie B. Following his retirement, Fabregas joined Como’s youth coaching system before transitioning to a senior team role, where he served as the assistant manager throughout the 2023–24 season.
Leaving no stone unturned for the upcoming Serie A campaign
In their preparation for their massive return to Serie A for the upcoming season, Como have left no stone unturned, as they mean serious business in the transfer window. After successfully completing all his coaching badges, Cesc Fabregas was officially announced as Biancoblu’s new head coach on a four-year contract.
The former Barcelona and Arsenal star, who is also a part-owner, stated, “I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach, and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position. I share the ambitions of the group and believe this is just the start of where this club can go. It’s going to be a tough and important season, but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready, and we all believe.”
Additionally, Como have already made a stellar nine signings this summer, including big-name recruits such as Andrea Belotti, Alberto Moreno and Pepe Reina. The club signed Belotti on a permanent deal for a total package of €4.50 million from fellow Italian side AS Roma. On the other hand, the Spanish duo of Morena and Reina joined as free agents following the expiration of their respective contracts with LaLiga outfit Villarreal.
Como 1907 become the fifth team from the Lombardia region, joining the likes of AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atalanta and Monza to play in Serie A, as they hope to cement their place in the Italian top-flight division.
