Copa America 2024: Ronald Araujo sidelined for two months after picking up injury against Brazil

Barcelona adds Araujo to list of fresh injuries after Pedri suffered knee problem.
Barcelona are currently dealing with yet another major setback as a result of Pedri’s recent injury sustained while serving for his country. This time, Ronald Araujo, their star defender suffered a muscular injury and will be out for two months.
The event happened during Uruguay and Brazil‘s Copa America 2024 quarterfinal match. Araujo had to leave the pitch in tears near the 30-minute mark of the match due to a right leg muscle issue.
Araujo was hurt while attempting to stop a cross. The Uruguayan centre defender was extending his right leg when he abruptly fell, clutching his face in agony.
As soon as opponents and teammates crowded around him, it became evident how urgent the circumstance was, and Uruguay‘s medical staff instantly requested a substitution. Eventually, Jose Maria Gimenez took his place.
This is especially troubling because Ronald Araujo has a history of muscle issues. In the five years after he joined Barcelona in 2019, he has suffered from various muscular problems.
It is still unclear how serious this most recent injury is until a complete diagnosis is made. The early indications meanwhile are concerning and point to a potential major impact on Araujo’s preseason preparations with Barcelona under new manager Hansi Flick.
This exacerbates an already difficult position for Flick. Amidst a flurry of injuries, the new manager is getting ready to begin his term at Barcelona.
Important players like Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong are already anticipated to be out for the start of the preseason. It will be harder for Flick to get the club ready for the next season with Araujo perhaps out as well.
For Barcelona, the occurrence of these injuries could not have been worse. The lack of key players throws off their plans and makes the team less cohesive and prepared as they look to bolster and rebuild their roster.
