Cristiano Ronaldo becomes oldest player to assist a goal at Euros as Portugal qualify for last 16

Ronaldo assisted former club teammate Bruno Fernandes for the 3rd goal
Portugal easily defeated Turkey 3-0, earning a ticket in the Euro 2024 last 16 as Group F victors with a goal from Bruno Fernandes, Samet Akaydin’s own goal, and Bernardo Silva. Cristiano Ronaldo (39 years, 138 days) also became the oldest player to assist a goal in Euros history.
When a cross from Nuno Mendes rebounded off a Turkish defender and found the Manchester City attacker lurking alone in the box, he slammed it past the custodian to put the Portuguese ahead. Silva scored his first goal in a major international event in the 21st minute.
After seven minutes, despite their best efforts to keep it out, Turkish defender Akaydin made a hilarious error while trying to play the ball back to his custodian, who was out of position and unable to stop it from rolling into the net.
Portugal continued to dominate and increased their lead when replacement Ruben Neves cleared the offside line after receiving a long ball to release Cristiano Ronaldo. He then crossed the ball for Fernandes, who had to put it into a vacant goal after pulling the goalie.
With one game remaining, Portugal’s victory puts them three points clear of Turkey in second place and five above Georgia and the Czech Republic in Group F.
Portugal’s assured and commanding performance against an exhausted and agitated Turkey guaranteed them a spot in the Euro 2024 round of 16.
Zeki Celik had given the Turks a great run down the wing, and they ought to have seized the lead early. Kerem Akturkoglu beat Joao Cancelo with a cross that curved over to the back post, but he fluffed his attempt. After a fantastic opportunity was lost, Roberto Martinez’s team seized the initiative.
Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva scored their first Euros goals in this match.
