Cristiano Ronaldo has paid a moving homage to his Portugal teammate and Liverpool striker Diogo Jota following his death in a vehicle accident early Thursday morning in Spain at the age of 28.
His brother, Andre Silva, a Portuguese football player for FC Penafiel, was in the car with Jota when he passed away. According to Spanish authorities, there were no other automobiles involved.
Diogo Jota recently clinched the Nations League with Portugal and the Premier League with Liverpool. A few weeks ago, he wed Rute Cardoso, his longtime companion, with whom he had three kids.
Cristiano Ronaldo expresses his grief on Instagram over Jota’s passing
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo posted on Instagram.
“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married.
“To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
Other players offering condolences on Jota’s passing
Jota’s passing has been greeted with a great deal of grief and passion, and tributes to him have been paid by many in the sport and beyond.
David de Gea, a Spanish goalkeeper who has played against Jota several times in the Premier League, too, paid praise.
Ruben Neves, Jota’s former Wolves colleague, paid respect to his departed countryman on his Instagram account.
Jota’s sudden passing has been hard to process and serves as a painful reminder of how unpredictable life is. He was one of the best strikers in the Premier League and gave the fans many memorable moments for Liverpool. It will be hard to digest his passing as the entire football world will mourn his death.
During these tough times, the fans and the club will stand by his family after the striker got married a few days ago. The Reds have announced that they will provide every support to his family and have urged to respect his privacy.
