Both sides are set to meet in the Euro 2024 group stage

When Croatia and Albania take the field in Hamburg on Wednesday, both teams will be desperate for a positive result after disappointing losses in their opening Group B matches at Euro 2024.

For the Croatians, their 3-0 defeat against Spain was a rude awakening. The 2018 World Cup finalists were outclassed by the Spanish attack led by Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz, and Dani Carvajal. While Croatia had more shots and a higher expected goals total, their inability to put the ball in the net proved costly.

Manager Zlatko Dalic was particularly frustrated with striker Bruno Petkovic’s missed penalty, questioning why more experienced players like Ivan Perisic or Lovro Majer didn’t take it instead. The defeat extended Croatia’s recent struggles in competitive matches, with three losses in their last five games.

However, the veteran Croatian midfield of Marcelo Brozovic and Luka Modric provides hope for a turnaround. Against Spain, Modric made a game-high 13 line-breaking passes despite playing only 65 minutes. At 38 years and 280 days old, he also became the fourth oldest player to feature in the Euros.

For Albania, their 2-1 loss to Italy was a bitter pill to swallow after Nedim Bajrami scored the fastest goal in European Championship history just 23 seconds into the match. Despite the early lead, they couldn’t hold off Italy, who equalized through Alessandro Bastoni and took the lead via Nicolo Barella.

It was Albania’s first competitive loss since March 2023 against Poland, snapping a seven-game unbeaten run in such fixtures. Manager Sylvinho will hope his side can regroup, as they’ve avoided consecutive competitive losses since September 2022.

Interestingly, Albania has already matched their goal tally from their only previous Euros appearance in 2016, when they scored just once across three games. However, they’ve won just one of their four total matches in the competition’s history.
