Will Delaney and Højlund’s absence prove to be critical for Denmark?

Denmark and Switzerland are set to lock horns in their opening Group A4 match at the UEFA Nations League. The match is bound to be critical as qualifications for the next stage would very much depend on it. As this group also holds the current European champions Spain and a very formidable Serbia, this match has a lot of relevance attached to it.

The top two teams would automatically progress to the quarter-finals so it looks like this match will be a decider to see who takes up the second spot. Switzerland are definitely the stronger team on paper but on their day Denmark can turn it around as well. The Swiss, who are going through a purple patch right now made it to their consecutive second quarter finals this year at the 2024 Euros.

They just lost one game in the entire tournament that too in the tiebreaker against eventual finalists England. The Danes did not have a spectacular outing like the Swiss at the recently concluded Euro but they were no pushovers either. The “Danish Dynamite” did make things difficult for their opposition and earned themselves a deserving spot in the round of 16. However, a 2-0 loss against Germany resulted in their exit from the competition.

Kick-Off:

Friday, 6th September 2024 at 12:15 AM IST

Location: Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, Denmark

Form :

Denmark (in all competitions) – W-D-D-D-L

Switzerland ( in all competitions) – W-D-D-W-L

Players to watch :

Christian Eriksen (Denmark)

Christian Eriksen will be the target man for Denmark in this upcoming fixture. The experienced midfielder who has been in good form will be entrusted with controlling the midfield and also finishing the chances when the opportunity presents itself.

Eriksen who is Denmark’s most capped player also happens to be the fourth highest goal-scorer for the country with 42 goals to his name. With the captain Piere Emile Hojbjerg out of the equation with a hamstring injury, he will basically lead the side both on and off the field.

Manuel Akanji (Switzerland)

Manuel Akanji has literally been like a Swiss knife in the Switzerland defence, cutting off any attacking prowess of the opposition. The Manchester City man is known for his marking abilities and calmness in the box making him the best defender in current times. Akanji showed great form in the last Euro and has been continuing that run in the Premier League.

He will look to thwart any possibilities of the Danish side and will also be the leading figure in the defence. He will also be delegated the responsibility of keeping Erisken in check. The battle between these two would be fun to watch as they are also Manchester Derby rivals.

Denmark and Switzerland have always played low-scoring games and as such it has been a very goal-shy affair. Both teams have prioritized solidifying their defence before going in for the offensive.
