Trump has continued to voice his frustration about moving some World Cup matches.

Boston is the third city to face such a warning from the US president. Donald Trump once again stated he would encourage FIFA to move the 2026 World Cup games from a host city due to the politics of that city. Trump added that, due to possible safety concerns, he might think about taking a similar measure against Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics.

Donald Trump can exert force on the governing body of each tournament to change the host cities, but he lacks the legal ability to actively take either action.

His remarks were made during a press conference with President Javier Milei of Argentina, who was in the White House following the news of a $20 billion bailout for the South American nation.

A reporter questioned Donald Trump near the end of the event about a recent “street takeover” in Boston that resulted in police officers being attacked and a police car being set on fire, and whether the incident’s worries could lead to the cancellation of hosting rights for the 48-team soccer tournament the following year.

Additionally, the reporter inquired as to whether Trump would collaborate with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu to resolve the matter.

“We could take them away,” Trump said of the World Cup games, which are due to be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, about 22 miles south-west of Boston.

“Their mayor is not good … She’s radical left, and they’re taking over parts of Boston. That’s a pretty big statement, right?”

“If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there’s unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA who’s phenomenal – and I would say, Let’s move into another location, and they would do that,” Trump said. “He wouldn’t love to do it, but he’d do it very easily.”

Ahead of the tournament, which will be held in 11 US cities, two in Canada, and three in Mexico next year, Infantino has made no secret of his attempts to publicly support Trump.

The FIFA president has attended several Oval Office functions, arranged for Trump to present Chelsea with the 2025 Club World Cup trophy following the competition’s final (during which the US president overstayed his welcome), and even postponed the congress of his own organisation to join Trump on a trip to the Middle East earlier in 2025.
