In an interview at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 final on Sunday, President Donald Trump discussed the status of America and his favourite athletes, also joking that the US should be forced to adopt the term “football” like the rest of the world.

At MetLife Stadium on Sunday night, Trump watched the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 final, where Chelsea FC defeated Paris Saint-Germain FC 3-0 in what he accurately called “a bit of an upset.”

The USA will now start preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2025. They are set to host the next edition of the World Cup the following year alongside Mexico and Canada.

Trump says he is ready to rename soccer as ‘football’ in the USA

Trump was thrilled when a reporter proposed issuing a new executive order that would formally rename soccer as “football” in the United States, after the disappointing game.

“I think we could do that,” the U.S. President told DAZN.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a longstanding friend, extended an invitation to the tournament to the commander-in-chief. He expressed his excitement at the growth of soccer in the United States and his expectation that it will soon overtake other nations in the world rankings in football.

When Infantino put the Club World Cup trophy in the Oval Office in March as a gift to the president, Trump cheekily added that FIFA had to create a brand-new one that nicely matched his characteristic golden décor.

Trump’s embrace of FIFA and his commitment to host consecutive events in the US have already earned Infantino accolades.

What’s next?

USA will now get ready to host another major tournament next year. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played in South America, with Mexico and Canada also being the co-hosts. Trump is also open to hosting more such competitions in the USA as he hopes to build the sport’s popularity in the country.

“[Sports] is about unity, a lot of getting together, a lot of love between countries. I guess this is probably the most international sport, so it can really bring the world together,” he told the outlet.
