This was the third-ever clash between these nations.

The Ecuador national football team faced off against the Germany national football team for their final group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The contest took place at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.

La Tri initiated their campaign with a loss against the Ivory Coast. They were held to a goalless draw by the debutants, Curacao, in their second group stage in the flagship tournament. They were fighting for their first win in their final group stage game and they were quite successful in doing so.

The Ecuador national football team have taken down the four-time world champions Germany in their third group stage game. It was the best performance by La Tri in the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. Ecuador’s first goal of 2026 World Cup

The 23-year-old Nilson Angulo scored an important equaliser for the Ecuador national football team in the ninth minute. He also became the first goalscorer for his nation in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This was an important goal for La Tri and later helped them stage their comeback.

4. Defence remains a strength for La Tri

Sebastián Beccacece jumped up in joy after the Ecuador national football team secured their first win on the grandest stage of them all this year. This keeps their doors open for a round of 32 berth. Despite all of the efforts by the four-time world champions, Germany, La Tri did not allow them to score more than one goal. Because of their calm and composed approach in the backline, they prevailed.

5. Kai Havertz over Deniz Undav, right choice?
