Edouard Mendy makes history as Al-Ahli win AFC Champions League Elite
The former Chelsea goalkeeper won his second ACL Elite.
Along with some outstanding stats, the Senegalese goalie Edouard Mendy has added another trophy to his resume.
Eduoard Mendy keeps accumulating more trophies. The Senegalese goalkeeper was crowned Asian champion once more with Al Ahli on Saturday, April 25, after winning the AFC Champions League Elite the previous season. Moreover, he has won European and African elite tournaments, including the UEFA Champions League and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2021.
For the second consecutive year, the Senegalese international and his Saudi team won the continental crown. This time by defeating FC Machida Zelvia.
Edouard Mendy enters the annals of history with this victory. The goalkeeper from Senegal is now the first goalkeeper in history to win both the AFC Champions League and the UEFA Champions League.
Additionally, despite Morocco’s subsequent 3-0 walkover, Edouard Mendy has kept a clean sheet in seven major finals he has participated in for both club and country. It notably includes both AFC Champions League victories with Al-Ahli, the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea, and the most recent two AFCON finals with Senegal.
Edouard Mendy’s success in elite competitions
His success in Europe started with Chelsea’s Champions League victory over Manchester City in 2020–2021. It was followed by a 1-1 draw with Villarreal in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup before Chelsea won on penalties. Mendy hasn’t given up a goal in a continental final since the Super Cup.
He played for Senegal in two AFCON finals, against Morocco in 2025 and Egypt in 2021. Both of which ended without a goal before a penalty shootout. Senegal won the 2025 tournament at first, but after an appeal ruling in March, Morocco were given the title by CAF.
Mendy and Al Ahli won back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite crowns in Asia, defeating Machida Zelvia this season and Kawasaki Frontale last season while keeping clean sheets in both finals.
