Curacao managed to get their first point of the FIFA World Cup 2026. All thanks to their veteran goalkeeper, Eloy Room, who stood his ground and denied every opportunity to Ecuador.
At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Curaçao’s goalkeeper Eloy Room created a World Cup record with 15 saves in his team’s 0-0 tie with Ecuador.
The 37-year-old had the second-highest number of saves in a World Cup match ever, continuously stopping the favoured South Americans.
Former USA custodian Tim Howard currently holds the record for most saves (16) in a World Cup match. But he needed extra time to reach that mark. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Curacao keeper was on the verge of surpassing that mark against Ecuador.

Room started his career in the Netherlands, rising through the youth ranks to establish himself as a staple in the country’s elite division.
Born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, Room played for the Eredivisie team Vitesse’s academy. After receiving one U20 cap for the Netherlands, he changed his allegiance and made his Curacao debut in 2015.
He spent the brunt of his early career at Vitesse, notably helping the club capture its first major championship, the KNVB Cup, in the 2016-2017 season.
He now plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, which is the second-tier American league. He earlier played for the Belgian team Cercle Brugge and the MLS team Columbus Crew.
