Howe is favourite to takeover the position of the Three Lions’ head coach.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has emerged as a contender to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager. England’s search for silverware once again culminated on a sore note as Spain beat them 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions reached consecutive finals at the Euros and had a shot to end their international title drought. Once again, they came up short and the only big achievement they have had at the international level continues to be the 1966 FIFA World Cup.

Although Southgate’s future as England manager is still unresolved according to recent reports, Howe has appeared as the front-runner to take over as the Three Lions’ boss.

Having a squad like England and not winning a single title will be described as a failure for Southgate, who couldn’t assemble the strongest XI to emerge superior in the competition. Their best performance came against the Netherlands in the semi-finals, where the world got to witness the talent on display in the England camp.

However, now the FA will have to make a crucial decision because Southgate seems to be another manager who has failed to lead England to a title, despite taking them to the final of the Euros twice.

Will Howe be an ideal successor to Southgate?

Eddie Howe is a pragmatic coach. At Newcastle United, he has done wonders, leading them to a UFEA Champions League spot in the 2022-23 Premier League table. He was backed by one of the wealthiest owners at Newcastle United, which aided the Magpies in signing some quality players. But, last season they were blighted by injuries, leading to a poor finish in the league.

He had an excellent managerial record at AFC Bournemouth as well. Under his stewardship, the Magpies’ players have performed well, with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak being the best of the lot. It’s time for England to make changes in the management, if they want to break their decades-old title curse.
