Harry Kane to lead England in the 2026 World Cup
With less than two weeks to the grand commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the footballing world is preparing itself to witness the ultimate battle.
The 2026 edition is set to be a tournament to break multiple records. It will be the first World Cup campaign to be hosted by three nations, being co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada. It will also be the largest edition to date, with a record 48 teams, compared to the previous 32.
With the final squads of every nation being finalized, the favourites have been formulated, with England amongst them. The England national football team will be entering the tournament with huge expectations after consistent performances and bolstering arguably the most star-studded squad of the competition.
England had a disastrous 2022 World Cup campaign. Despite finishing at the top of their group, including a 6-2 win against Iran, the side was eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual finalists France. However, they improved significantly, finishing as the runners-up in the 2024 UEFA Euros.
Striker Harry Kane is set to lead the side in three consecutive tournaments. The Bayern Munich starman will be entering the new edition after an incredible season, scoring 61 goals in all competitions. He successfully guided the side through the UEFA qualifiers, qualifying directly after finishing first in their group.
The England side had several notable additions, with some selections by manager Thomas Tuchel causing controversy amongst fans. Players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Harry Maguire, who served as a cornerstone for the national team over the years, were excluded to accommodate newer talents.
England are placed in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considered to be a difficult challenge for the European giants.
The group comprises Croatia, securing their spot after finishing at the top of their UEFA qualifier group, Ghana, who advanced after topping their CAF qualification group, and Panama, confirming their CONCACAF spot and entering the competition as the highest-ranked non-European side. England will kick off their campaign on June 18 in a heavyweight clash against Croatia.
