England have topped Group L with seven points.
England defeated Panama 2-0 in their last group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium on Saturday. After a silent first half, the Three Lions returned with full confidence and scored twice in the second half.
The first goal was scored by Jude Bellingham, courtesy of Bukayo Saka’s assist. Later, Harry Kane doubled the side’s lead with an assist from Bellingham. The Real Madrid attacker was England’s top-performing player on the ground.
On that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from the FIFA World Cup 2026 clash:
5. Jordan Pickford could be rested
While the whole team played well, Jordan Pickford looked a little lacklustre in the first half. The 32-year-old is unarguably one of the most important and experienced players in the English line-up. However, Dean Henderson could be trusted with the gloves.
4. Panama can fight against possession-based football
Thomas Tuchel prefers playing a highly adaptable, possession-based football, primarily focused on aggressive counter-pressing and positional fluidity.
However, Panama did not allow the Three Lions enough counterattacking opportunities, and England still managed to keep 68 per cent possession and take 16 shots compared to Panama’s 13. Cristian Martinez was Los Canaleros’s top star of the game.

3. Injury woes for England are not ending
Jarell Quansah, who started the game as England’s right back, was subbed off in the 63rd minute following his late tackle on Jorge Luis Rodriguez.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender has reportedly sustained an ankle injury. However, the actual injury will later be revealed in the post-match tests. But considering the side’s current injury situation, Quansah’s problem has made things worse.
2. Tough day at work for Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford finally got the chance to be in the starting XI of the Three Lions against Panama, but the Englishman failed to give a reliable performance by turning chances into goals. He took the most shots in the game, five, but only one was on target.
Rashford came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, but he lacked clinical finishing. The 28-year-old also completed only one out of the five dribbles he attempted. Additionally, he won only 29% of the ground duels he was part of (2/7).
1. The Harry Kane curse is over
After scoring a brace in England’s opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Croatia, Harry Kane failed to score against Ghana in the second match.
According to multiple reports, a Ghanaian spiritualist put a Bayern Munich attacker under a spell, which prevented him from scoring against the Black Stars. However, with his goal against Panama, the curse has ended.
How many teams from Group L have qualified for the knockout stage?
Three: England, Croatia and Ghana.
Who scored the goals in the match?
Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane
