The Euro 2020 runners-up will hope to secure their place in the quarter-final.

England, who began this summer’s European Championship campaign with a triumph over Serbia in the Ruhr Valley city, returns to Gelsenkirchen this weekend with the ultimate goal of going a step further than losing in the Euro 2020 final.

As Group C champions, the Three Lions avoided a possibly more difficult path to Berlin, where the Henri Delaunay trophy will be awarded in two weeks.

Gareth Southgate’s team secured five points from their matches against Denmark, Slovenia, and Serbia. They drew with the former two after a nervous 1-0 victory against a relatively weak Serbian team.

Even if history is undoubtedly not in their favour, Slovakia will not be taken lightly by its more prestigious rivals because they were able to stun Belgium in their opening game.

Even though the Falcons only managed one point from their next two games—a 1-1 tie with Romania and a loss to Ukraine—they managed to advance by placing third in Group E, as all teams finished with four points.

After scoring the game-winning goal against Romania, Ondrej Duda has spoken highly of head coach Francesco Calzona, to whom he attributes the majority of Slovakia’s recent comeback.

In ten games throughout the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, Calzona’s team only suffered two losses and now they collide with the Three Lions in the round of 16.
