Kane has established himself as one of the best English football players.
After scoring four goals in Bayern Munich’s 2024–25 Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League game at the Allianz Arena, Harry Kane established a new record for the most goals scored by an English footballer in the history of the Champions League.
With 33 goals in the UEFA Champions League, the skipper of England and all-time leading scorer for his country has surpassed Wayne Rooney’s 30 goals in the competition—all of which Rooney earned while playing for Manchester United.
In March 2023, Kane broke Rooney’s record for most goals scored for the national team. A few months later, in May 2023, Kane also exceeded Rooney’s Premier League goal total before moving from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich.
Is Harry Kane the greatest English player of all time?
In addition to being his second hat-trick of the campaign, his four goals against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday also represent the most he has ever scored in a UCL game.
His first came in Tottenham’s 3-0 victory against APOEL Nicosia in September 2017. In addition, Kane made history by being the first player to ever score three penalties in a single European Cup/Champions League game.
Kane didn’t play in the Champions League until after turning 23. In November 2016, at the age of 23, 117 days, he scored his first goal for Tottenham against Monaco.
Kane scored 21 goals in 32 Champions League games during his time at Spurs. However, he collected eight goals in 12 appearances for Bayern Munich last season, which saw them lose to eventual champions Real Madrid in the semifinals. That was the most goals he has ever added in a single UCL season.
Raheem Sterling, with 27 goals, is the second-highest-scoring male English player in the Champions League among all active players. If the on-loan Arsenal player had stayed at Chelsea, he would have had to sit out another season of the competition.
Instead, he will get the opportunity to score more goals in 2024–25 with the Gunners. Who knows, maybe he can also surpass Rooney’s 30-goal record this season.
