The former SL Benfica player has been dealing with knee pain.

Due to a persistent knee ailment, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández was dropped from the Argentina team that will play Angola this month.

Due to a bone oedema in his knee, Enzo Fernandez has disclosed that he is in “a lot of pain” and has chosen to miss the November international break to recover.

Oedema, which can affect the knees, ankles, or feet, is “often caused by a build-up of fluid in these areas,” according to the British National Health Service (NHS).

Fernandez dropped out of the national team squad with knee pain

Enzo Fernández has made 16 appearances for Chelsea this season. Moreover, he has participated in 79 club and national team games since the 2024–25 season began.

“I’ve been talking with the medical staff (of the Argentine national side) because I’ve been dealing with a knee problem for four months,” Fernandez told ESPN’s SportsCenter after Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolves.

He continued: “We made the decision together that I should rest for these two weeks, since the important part comes at the end of the season (the Finalissima against Spain and World Cup). It was very good to have discussed it and decide together that this is the best thing for my knee.

“I’m in a lot of pain. I’ll try to recover as much as possible over these two or three weeks and be 100 per cent ready to train and play with my teammates again.”

The Argentina Football Association (AFA) released a statement that featured a picture of Enzo Fernández with a strapping on that knee. They stated that he had been diagnosed with synovitis, a swelling of the synovial membrane.

After playing 83 minutes in Saturday’s three-goal victory over Wolves, Enzo Fernandez was replaced by Andrey Santos. Following the game, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the Argentina international had requested to be subbed because of discomfort.

The midfield player will miss Argentina’s friendly encounter against Angola on November 14 after playing in 10 of Chelsea’s 11 Premier League games this season.

Pedro Neto, who scored Chelsea’s third goal, had also requested to be replaced, according to the Blues manager Enzo Maresca. Despite being doubtful going into the match, he was able to start against his old team after passing a late fitness test. Jamie Gittens, a winger, eventually took his spot.

Maresca was asked about a knock Moises Caicedo suffered in the first half. The coach said: “Yeah, he was okay. It was just a kick in the first half in his knee.

“But he finished the game. I asked him after the game and he was okay.

“Pedro Neto and Enzo Enzo both asked for a change. Pedro for the groin problem, Enzo for the knee. We need to see how they are now.”

How long will Enzo Fernández be out?

He said he will rest for three weeks.

What injury has he suffered?

He has a bone oedema in his knee, which can affect the knees, ankles, or feet.

Has Fernandez been called up for national team duty?

With his current situation, the Argentina national football team decided not to bother the player for the November international break.
