Enzo Fernandez reacts to Luis de la Fuente's Spain midfield verdict

Fernandez was key in helping Argentina win the 2022 World Cup.
Argentina player Enzo Fernandez disagreed with Luis de la Fuente’s claim that Spain have the greatest midfield in the current 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
La Roja have a fearsome midfield, with Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, Pedri, Martín Zubimendi, Dani Olmo, Gavi, Alex Baena, and Mikel Merino.
The defending European champions defeated Saudi Arabia 4-0 on Sunday (June 21). Their first victory in the competition followed a goalless draw with Cape Verde.
Meanwhile, holders Argentina, who include Enzo Fernandez and Rodrigo De Paul in the centre of the park, began defending the title last week with a brilliant 3-0 thrashing of Algeria.

Ahead of the match against Austria, Enzo Fernandez commented on the Spain manager’s greatest midfield comment:
“Luis de la Fuente saying Spain have best midfield in the world by far? First of all, before I start, Happy Father’s Day to everyone. And now, to answer your question, honestly, those are just opinions. I’m not going to get into any controversy or anything like that.”
“Spain have one of the best midfields in the world because they have great players. But in the end, they’re just opinions. As for who’s better and who’s worse, I think that gets decided on the pitch.”
Argentina aim to join Brazil (1962) and Italy (1938) as the only teams to successfully defend their FIFA World Cup titles.
Argentina will face Austria in their second group game today at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, after defeating Algeria 3-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign opener.
Lionel Messi, who has scored three goals against Algeria, will have the opportunity to break Miroslav Klose’s (16) all-time goalscoring record in the competition.
