The midfielder will undergo surgery to get rid of groin problem

Enzo Fernandez will be sidelined for the rest of the Premier League season after groin surgery to treat an injury in time for the Copa America.

The Chelsea midfield player has reportedly had an inguinal hernia, which is a condition that affects the area between the groyne and the thigh, for more than a month, reported by the Argentine publication Ole.

The World Cup winner will have surgery and is anticipated to miss three weeks of play before making a comeback in time to play in the Copa America, which begins in the US on June 20.

At first, the Chelsea medical staff tried to treat Fernandez with a non-invasive treatment, but it became clear that he would need surgery after conferring with the physicians of Argentina’s national team.

Furthermore, all parties decided that the most appropriate course of action for the 23-year-old would be to receive therapy before the start of the Copa America, with the Blues’ season all but over following their elimination from the FA Cup on Saturday.

Fernandez conferred with a kinesiologist he had previously worked with at River Plate before deciding to have the surgery, and the kinesiologist travelled to London with him.

Enzo Fernandez did not play in the 6-0 victory over Everton the previous week, but he did start the 5-0 thumping of Arsenal before the 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Since signing the Blues for £107 million in January of last year, the Argentina international has created four assists and produced three goals in the Premier League for Benfica.

At the time, the amount paid for Fernandez set a British record; however, the club has since topped it by spending £115 million to acquire fellow midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton.

In the fifteen months since Fernandez moved to West London, Chelsea’s league standing has not significantly improved, and although there have been occasional demonstrations of his evident talent and passing range, doubts have persisted over whether the team received value for its money.

But Mauricio Pochettino maintained that the 23-year-old’s finest was still to come.
