The Dutchman was sacked this season by the Red Devils.

If Borussia Dortmund decide to fire Nuri Sahin in the next few days, Erik ten Hag is a strong contender to take his position as coach.

Sahin is under increasing criticism after Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday, their seventh in 18 Bundesliga games this season. The former midfielder took Edin Terzic’s place in the summer, but their poor play has left them in a precarious position. According to Sky Sport in Germany, he will be fired if they lose their next game.

With Ten Hag out of a job since Manchester United fired him in November, the Dutchman is reportedly one of the top contenders Dortmund could select to take his position. While Pep Guardiola was in charge of the senior squad, the 54-year-old coached Bayern Munich II, gaining experience in Germany. After coaching Utrecht and Ajax back home, he went on to take the position at Old Trafford.

Sandro Wagner, a former Bayern striker and Germany’s assistant coach, is also being examined by the Bundesliga club, as is Sebastian Hoeness, who is now making an impression at Stuttgart.

Sahin has been cautioned that his team “need” a win by director Lars Ricken ahead of their game against Bologna in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. The inability to rack up three points might see him thrown out before his rookie season is complete.

Speaking after defeat in Frankfurt, Lars Ricken explained:

“Nuri will be on the bench against Bologna, but of course, we all know that; Nuri knows that too, with the clear expectation that we now simply need victories and successes.”

According to reports from Germany this week, Sahin’s team is desperate to add new players in January after the season’s first half saw disappointing results. They need to bring in new players for the attack as they recently sold Donyell Malen to Aston Villa.

Rashford has been linked with a move to Dortmund this January. He hasn’t played since being benched for the Manchester derby at the beginning of December. The academy graduate acknowledged that it might be time for a change of scenery.
